The Effects Poverty Has On Behavior

Children in poverty are more likely to display:

- Limited Vocabulary (Bornstein, Haynes, & Painter, 1998).
- Curbed learning due to fewer things to play and interact with
- Acting out behaviors
- Impatience, interrupting and impulsivity (in lower income cultures this is a sign of effective contribution to conversation, this is not true of middle class culture)
- Gaps in politeness
- Inappropriate emotional responses
- Limited range of behavioral responses (you must teach students otherwise)
- Less empathy for others
- This can lead to risky decision making
- Increased hopelessness over time, due to lack of supports in learning in middle class culture
-Passive and uninterested behaviors in regards to school work
